The study used four metrics to get a well-rounded view of each state&#8217;s road safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The criteria included for each state were:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Number of total DUI arrests per 1,000 individual drivers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Total number of road fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Percentage of drivers insured<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google trends on \u201cspeeding ticket\u201d terms (how often \u201cspeeding ticket\u201d and \u201ctraffic ticket\u201d were searched according to Google Trends)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key findings revealed Mississippi to be the worst state in terms of driver performance and incidents of arrests and fatalities for the third year in a row.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Massachusetts performed best in the nation overall, with the lowest number of deaths and ranking in the top 10 for the three other metrics included in the study.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Road Safety Statistics and Details<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York is currently listed in the 6th position for states with the \u201cbest drivers,\u201d or the highest rate of road safety according to the above study and factors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/site\/nypd\/stats\/traffic-data\/traffic-data-collision.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there were 228,047 accidents in New York in 2018, and of those collisions, 44,300 resulted in injuries. However, the numbers for 2020 are likely significantly lower because of COVID-related restrictions on travel and quarantine orders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most accident-related injuries occurred in passengers involved in the crash. The cause of those crashes resulted from multiple factors, but the most common causes of crashes were driver distraction and following other cars too closely.
