But with a little additional planning, your 2020 Thanksgiving celebration could look a lot like the one you had last year.

Before you start going through our well-put-together list, think about what makes Thanksgiving special for your family. Most people would say that togetherness is the most necessary ingredient in a Thanksgiving party.

Coronavirus has changed the definition of “togetherness,” but contrary to popular myth, COVID-19 does not have to keep us apart.

Send a Treat

Not that there’s anything wrong with getting, but it really is better to give than to receive. If your close friend or relative cannot make it to your party, consider sending a personal gift,.

Movie Time!

Now we’re talking. We recommend a Thanksgiving movie or add a Christmas kickoff movie to the lineup. Try a warm fuzzy classic, like Miracle on 34th Street! You don’t have to be in the same house or even state to watch a movie ‘together’!

Answer Questions

Replace the often-tedious “What are you thankful for” question with some festive conversation starters, like your least favorite Thanksgiving dish, a random act of kindness you’ve recently witnessed, or a new tradition you’d like to start.

Virtual Party

By this time, we are all getting rather good at interacting online. For example, we usually remember to look at the camera, instead of at the screen, when we talk. Put these skills to good use and make people feel like they are part of your gathering, no matter where they are.

Everyone Helps

Speaking of new traditions, why is it that there are cookers and eaters at most Thanksgiving parties?

Everyone can pitch in when it comes to food preparation. And, if the final product doesn’t look exactly like the one in the Good Housekeeping picture, that’s part of the charm.

You can always share you favorite recipes with others line, make it like a cooking class!

Crafts for Kids

Something as simple as a hand-traced turkey can keep kids busy for quite a while. As a bonus, you get a keepsake that you’ll treasure for many Thanksgivings to come.

Watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade

Even if you are not a parade fan, you don’t want to miss this (hopefully) once-in-a-lifetime event. New York Mayor Bill DeBlasio said there will be a virtual parade this year.

Apparently, all the floats will be on 6th Avenue, but not at the same time. This should be interesting. The virtual parade runs from 9 a.m. to noon on NBC in all time zones.

The coronavirus pandemic has put a damper on pretty much every family event on the calendar this year.
