However, unfortunately, some others<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have used the current crisis to take advantage of the scared and vulnerable through scams capitalizing on coronavirus panic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve compiled a list of some of the most common circulating COVID-19 scams that you should watch out for.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fake Cures and Vaccines<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have been thousands of <\/span><a href=\"\/practice-areas\/personal-injury\/national-coronavirus-lawyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coronavirus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scams that have hit the web since US outbreaks began weeks ago, including purported cures and vaccines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many malicious websites have been created to sell these so-called cures to take advantage of people\u2019s desperation. One cybersecurity company reports seeing over<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mimecast.com\/blog\/2020\/04\/threat-intelligence-briefing-skyrocketing-coronavirus-cyber-attacks-spur-increasing-security-cooperation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 59,700 examples of websites<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that have been maliciously created to take money from the desperate and vulnerable, including 44 claiming to have a COVID-19 cure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/coronavirus\/scams-consumer-advice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FTC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and WHO have stated that there is currently no cure or vaccine for COVID-19. Although many organizations are working around the clock to find potential treatments, there is still no vaccine available to the public, and any reports of proven cures or vaccines are untrue and potentially <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-news\/no-products-can-cure-covid-19#Fake-COVID-19-health-claims\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harmful<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In gross cases of medical malpractice, there have even been several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsandiego.com\/news\/local\/doctor-accused-of-selling-fake-covid-19-cure-followed-presidents-lead-attorney\/2312944\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doctors around the country<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who have sold \u201cmiracle cures\u201d claiming to cure COVID-19. But as we\u2019ve seen from the spread of misinformation, when it comes to the coronavirus, you should only trust medical information given directly from public health officials and your qualified personal healthcare provider. If you hear something that sounds fishy or too good to be true, fact-check using official government websites.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fake Coronavirus Tests<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There has also been an increasing number of websites popping up offering at-home testing kits, some charging up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2020\/04\/03\/coronavirus-fraud-fake-tests-bogus-cures-and-vaccines-take-root\/5112827002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$250 per test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until recently, there were no at-home testing kits that were proved to work, and none approved by the government. However, the FDA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-authorizes-first-standalone-home-sample-collection-kit-can-be-used\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced this month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that one at-home testing kit has been approved which allows individuals to send samples to a specified lab for testing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These testing kits still require a doctor\u2019s order, and any other kits that do not come directly from an official healthcare provider are not proven to be accurate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charity Scams<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many people doing good and raising money for charities to help support those who are most vulnerable during the pandemic. However, there are also plenty of criminals that are taking advantage of other people\u2019s kindness. Be wary when donating to a charity you aren\u2019t familiar with; instead of helping those in need, your money could be going nowhere but a scammer\u2019s pocket.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before donating, look up the organization on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.charitynavigator.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charity Navigator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to check if it\u2019s legit or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phishing Emails and Text Messages<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phishing emails have long been in use for nearly any scam imaginable. Most email providers have the ability to stop spam from appearing in your main inbox, and the same goes for phone network providers\u2014but there are still times when malicious messages slip through the cracks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phishing emails generally claim to be from a trusted source and attempt to solicit payment or personal information from you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the coronavirus phishing scams that have been running include those attempting to sell fake cures or tests, as mentioned above. Others include messages attempting to steal <\/span><a href=\"\/article\/all-about-the-cares-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stimulus checks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by impersonating the IRS, masquerading as the World Health Organization to entice you to click on a malicious link disguised as coronavirus updates, or imitating internal company emails with supposed COVID-19 guidelines that really include malware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn how to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.norton.com\/internetsecurity-online-scams-coronavirus-phishing-scams.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recognize the signs of phishing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including click-bait titles and scare tactics, odd grammar and spelling mistakes, and misspelled email addresses to avoid falling for these types of COVID-19 scams.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Price Gouging<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A final unfortunate byproduct of COVID-19 has been <\/span><a href=\"\/article\/coronavirus-litigationcovid-19-pandemic-plays-out-in-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">price gouging<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or placing exorbitant price increases on essential products such as hand sanitizer, toilet paper, and food, which is illegal during a crisis. Price-gouging sellers are taking advantage of those who desperately need essential products and groceries during coronavirus quarantine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, they are not without opposition; lawsuits are already in progress around the country against companies and individuals for unreasonably raising prices on face masks, food, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not Defenseless<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people feel defenseless after falling prey to a scam, but they don\u2019t have to.
