{"id":7073,"date":"2017-06-05T15:34:42","date_gmt":"2017-06-05T19:34:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:10028\/uncategorized\/napoli-shkolnik-files-lawsuit-opioid-manufacturers-ohio\/"},"modified":"2017-06-05T15:34:42","modified_gmt":"2017-06-05T19:34:42","slug":"napoli-shkolnik-files-lawsuit-opioid-manufacturers-ohio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/napolilaw.lemonadestand.org\/en\/article\/napoli-shkolnik-files-lawsuit-opioid-manufacturers-ohio\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawsuit Filed Against Opioid Manufacturers in Ohio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On June 5, 2017, Napoli Shkolnik filed a lawsuit against the major manufacturers and distributors of opioid pain medications on behalf of the City of Dayton, Ohio.\u00a0 Dayton has been hit as hard by the <a href=\"\/practice-areas\/pharmaceutical-litigation\/opioid-epidemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">opioid and heroin epidemic<\/a> as anywhere else in the nation.\u00a0 Despite the valiant efforts of the City and Mayor Nan Whaley, opioid addiction continues to destroy the lives of countless Dayton residents. \u00a0\u00a0This litigation is being led by Napoli Shkolnik attorneys Paul J. Napoli, Hunter Shkolnik, Joseph L. Ciaccio and Salvatore C. Badala.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Napoli Shkolnik is working with local law firm Climaco, Wilcox, Peca &amp; Garofoli, Co. L.P.A..\u00a0 The lawsuit will seek to reimburse the city for all of its expenses and hardships faced due to the actions of the deceptive actions of the opioid manufacturers and distributors.<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"sq-block\"><p>The residents and taxpayers of Dayton shouldn&#8217;t be stuck footing the bill for the opioid epidemic while these companies continue to make billions in profits selling and distributing opioid pain medications. They need to be held responsible for creating this crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">JOSEPH L CIACCIO, ATTORNEY<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Deaths at the hands of opioids continue to increase at an alarming rate within Ohio and the City of Dayton.\u00a0 In 2015, the City of Dayton led Montgomery County with 167 drug overdose deaths.\u00a0\u00a0 These numbers have only increased since then.\u00a0 Recently, the Montgomery County Coroner announced that they were running out of room to store the bodies of the opioid overdose victims.\u00a0 As of February 1<sup>st<\/sup>, 2017, Montgomery County had already processed 145 overdose related deaths for the year, with many of those occurring in Dayton.\u00a0 It is estimated that the number of deaths could reach over 700 by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>About 80% of the global opioid supply is consumed within the United States.\u00a0 According to the CDC, 8 Ohioans die everyday from unintentional drug overdose, with many of those occurring at the hands of opioids.\u00a0 Beginning in 2010 and continuing through 2015, nearly 800 million doses of opioid pain medications were dispensed per year to Ohio patients.\u00a0 That is approximately 72 doses per year for every man, woman and child in Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>Opioid medications bind to the areas of the brain that control pain and emotions, driving up levels of the feel-good hormone dopamine which can lead to an intense feeling of euphoria. As the brain becomes accustomed to these feelings, it can take more and more of the drug to produce the same feelings, leading to dependence and then addiction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMajor Whaley has taken major steps to combat the opioid crisis in her city\u201d, says <a href=\"\/napoli-attorney\/paul-napoli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul J.
