But what happens when a doctor unnecessarily performs medical procedures, ranging from tests to surgeries, at a patient\u2019s expense?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Types of Unnecessary Medical Procedures<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Doctors may perform an array of medical procedures in order to diagnose or treat an illness. Statistics show, however, that doctors also perform a number of <a href=\"\/practice-areas\/medical-malpractice\/unnecessary-procedures\/\"><em>unnecessary<\/em> procedures<\/a>. Some procedures that doctors perform that could be unnecessary for a specific patient include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Surgery;<\/li>\n<li>Cesarean section;<\/li>\n<li>Induced labor;<\/li>\n<li>CT scans;<\/li>\n<li>MRI scans;<\/li>\n<li>X-rays;<\/li>\n<li>Use of feeding tubes; and<\/li>\n<li>Pap smears for patients ages 30 to 65.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>How Big is the Problem?<\/h3>\n<p>Unnecessary medical procedures are a big problem in the United States. To be sure, a 2013 article published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/medical-procedures-prove-unnecessary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Scientific American<\/em><\/a> highlights data from the Institute of Medicine stating that unnecessary medical procedures cost about $750 billion each year, and comprise 30 percent of all medical costs.
