Like other such facilities, it uses ethylene oxide to sterilize medical devices. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2016-03\/documents\/ethylene_oxide_2004guide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to the EPA<\/a>, it also installed a catalytic oxidizer to control emissions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.industrynet.com\/listing\/3947042\/cosmed-group-inc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cosmed<\/a> also has a facility in Linden, where ethylene oxide is used to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/hazardous-air-pollutants-ethylene-oxide\/forms\/linden-new-jersey-eto-sterilization-plant-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sterilize agricultural products like spices and nuts<\/a>. The facility opened in 1986 and operates four sterilizers that were installed between 1986 and 2000 and uses a two-stage scrubbing control system to control emissions, according to the EPA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While conducting research to develop new emission rules, EPA investigators discovered elevated cancer risks in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/epa-launches-community-engagement-efforts-new-ethylene-oxide-risk-information#:~:text=EPA%20used%20updated%20EtO%20emissions,at%2023%20of%20those%20sterilizers.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">23 communities<\/a>. The agency plans to propose stronger regulations later this year for hazardous emissions, including ethylene oxide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ethylene Oxide and Cancer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manufacturers use EtO to make detergents, thickeners, solvents, and plastics. Ethylene oxide is also a component in various chemical compounds, such as various organic chemicals such as ethylene glycol, ethanolamines, simple and complex glycols, and polyglycol ethers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This versatile chemical is often used as a hospital disinfectant and a key ingredient in many pesticides, mostly because it alters cellular DNA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of this quality, EtO can cause various kinds of cancer, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2016-09\/documents\/ethylene-oxide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leukemia and lymphoma<\/a>.
