Now, fertility joins that list. According to the latest studies, participants who used hair relaxers for at least <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/aje\/advance-article-abstract\/doi\/10.1093\/aje\/kwad079\/7098283?redirectedFrom=PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10 years<\/a>, or at least five times per year, had the lowest fertility rates. Phthalates, phenols, and parabens are a few of the chemicals in relaxers that may contribute to reduced fertility, the researchers said. They cautioned that the full set of ingredients is rarely included on product labels. \u201cOur work underscores the importance of expanding research on the reproductive health effects of beauty product use to promote environmental justice and increase health equity,\u201d study lead author Lauren Wise, a professor of epidemiology at Boston University\u2019s School of Public Health, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/news\/articles\/2023\/hair-relaxer-use-may-affect-ability-to-conceive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chemical Relaxers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.napolilaw.lemonadestand.org\/paraben\/\">Parabens<\/a>, which often aren\u2019t included on product labels, might be the most concerning chemical ingredient in hair relaxers. Many cosmetic makers used parabens as the primary preservative. Researchers believe that parabens inhibit the membrane transport process, making them excellent antibacterial agents. This same process also interrupts RNA and DNA synthesis. The body may be able to tolerate low paraben levels in makeup and other products, but it can\u2019t tolerate the high paraben levels in chemical hair relaxers. Some people have severe allergic reactions to parabens. These substances also frequently cause chemical burns. As for long-term ill health effects, they include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Breast Cancer<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/risk-prevention\/chemicals\/antiperspirants-and-breast-cancer-risk.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to the American Cancer Society<\/a>, parabens don\u2019t elevate the risk of breast cancer as much as smoking, obesity, and some other risk factors. But parabens still elevate the risk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Estrogen\/Hormone Issues<\/strong>: Parabens are chemically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcpp.org\/resource\/parabens\/#:~:text=Increased%20cell%20growth%3A%20Several%20studies,the%20development%20of%20breast%20cancer.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">similar to estrogen<\/a> and many other hormones. As a result, the body doesn\u2019t naturally produce as many hormones. When the person stops using the chemical hair relaxer, the body\u2019s hormone production usually doesn\u2019t adjust to that change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Low Birth Weight<\/strong>: N-butylparaben, a specific kind of paraben that\u2019s especially common in chemical hair relaxers, <a href=\"https:\/\/todayspractitioner.com\/childrens-health\/triclosan-and-parabens-increase-odds-of-preterm-and-low-birth-weight\/#.ZF5AlHbMJD8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has been linked to decreased birth size<\/a> of female babies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fertility Issues<\/strong>: According to several studies, urinary propylparaben shortens the female menstrual cycle, creating fertility issues. Moreover, high butylparaben levels in the mother\u2019s urine and levels in cord blood were associated with increased odds of preterm birth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/what-are-parabens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parabens also harm our environment<\/a>. Even low butylparaben levels kill coral, according to laboratory tests. Parabens have been detected in surface waters, fish, and sediments. Furthermore, when parabens are combined with chlorinated tap water, a number of chlorinated paraben byproducts form.
